I'm starting with this photo because I think it's probably the best one of your recent uploads. Remember I'm trying to critique these by their artistic value. So what makes a photo or really any art good is when people look at it and it is interesting to them, invoking feelings and whatever. This photo is compelling enough to hold someone's attention more than your other photos. The subject of the photo is just an interesting guy, and you don't have to know who he is to get value out of what he's doing simply because of that. Beyond that though the pose he's in/ what he's doing is compelling as well because it's not exactly what you expect him to do. Also I'm a big fan of how you captured his face just barely showing from behind his hair. What really really helps make this photo over many of the others though, is the lighting. This was photographed at a really good time of day were the lighting makes everything more vivid. There are way more colors going on in the background and in his hair, plus there are cooler more dramatic shadows on his arm, clothes and guitar itself. I know you can't always photograph the things you want at every time of day but always try to keep in mind that natural lighting at this time of day separates out elements of a photo more vividly and produces more interesting colors in general. Well it all really depends on what your photographing and how you want to convey it but definitely keep in mind what the lighting is adding or taking away from your photos. I try to talk a bit about the composition. But there's no a whole lot to it. The photo is really just him and the background and it's cropped about as close to him as possible. I don't think there's anything wrong with how it's cropped. The diagonal line between grey stage and "green" foliage is really nice. I think the one thing in the background that's detracting from the photo is the white guitar. I don't think it's good how he overlaps it nor how it's cut out along the edge of the photo. But sometimes you just can't avoid that stuff. Anyway that's my thoughts on this photo. I'll comment on your other ones too but it might not be this long XD
I really thought I had responded to all your critiques but I'm coming to realize I DIDN'T. That's weird, but my life is weird so I'll go ahead and say what I originally THOUGHT I said, gawd technology why ya gotta be so unreliable jeez
Just-- oh my gosh, thank you so much for all of your really good input! I know you said that you weren't all that good at critiqueing photography but your words have definitely helped a ton!
I'm also on board with you when it comes to that guitar being slightly distracting, man. I was all "Damn you, white guitar!" But I couldn't do much about it. e_e I think if I were to take this photo again and edit it with the software I have now I would have figured out some way to remove it without it being a huge deal. So it goes! Hmm. Perhaps one of these days I'll revamp everything.
But oh my gosh thank you for all your input, Olimar! YOU ARE AWESOME!! I really appreciate it! You have helped me a lot. :3
